Vonage Setup: Adding a Voice-Enabled Number

Voice (IVR) flows require a voice-enabled phone number connected to your workspace. If you’re using Vonage, you can purchase a virtual number with Voice capability in the Vonage dashboard, then connect it to RapidPro.app as a channel. This guide shows how to set up the number, connect your Vonage account, and troubleshoot common setup issues.

Connect a Vonage voice number for IVR

If you just need the essentials, follow this quick path:

  1. Buy a Vonage virtual number with Voice capability enabled
  2. Start adding a Vonage channel in RapidPro.app
  3. Connect your Vonage account (API Key + Secret)
  4. Select and connect the phone number
  5. Troubleshoot missing IVR options, number availability, and audio issues

Once the channel is connected, you can create and test Voice (IVR) flows using your Vonage number.

Step-by-Step Process

1
Create a Vonage account and purchase a voice-enabled number

  1. Sign up for a Vonage account (or sign in).
  2. In the Vonage APIs dashboard, open Numbers (left sidebar).
  3. Select Buy Numbers.
  4. Follow the purchase steps and make sure Voice capability is enabled.
  5. (Optional) Choose a toll-free number if it fits your use case and is available.

Common Issues & Quick Fixes

Voice (IVR) flow options don’t appear
  • Confirm the number you purchased is voice-enabled (Voice capability enabled in Vonage).
  • Confirm the channel is added and Enabled in Workspace Settings → Channels.
I can’t find my Vonage API Key / Secret
  • Open your Vonage account settings page and copy the API Key and API Secret.
  • Make sure you’re in the Vonage APIs dashboard (not a different Vonage product area).
I don’t see any available numbers for my country
  • Try a different country/region selection.
  • If availability is limited, consider an alternative provider or test IVR using an Android channel (if that’s part of your workflow).
Calls connect, but audio isn’t what I expect
  • Confirm your flow uses the correct Voice (IVR) actions (Play Message, Menu Selection, Wait for Audio, etc.).
  • If you’re uploading recordings, verify they’re in the supported format (see the audio upload guide).
