First Conversation: Triggering a Welcome Flow on Facebook/Telegram

This trigger automatically starts a flow when a contact begins a new conversation with your Facebook Messenger page or Telegram bot, letting you launch a “Get Started” or onboarding flow on first contact, with optional group filters and channel selection to control which page/bot the trigger applies to.

Start a welcome flow on first conversation in a few steps

If you just need the essentials, follow this:

  1. Confirm your workspace has a Facebook Messenger or Telegram channel connected
  2. Go to Triggers and click + New Trigger
  3. Select Start a flow when a conversation is started by a contact
  4. Choose the channel (page/bot) and the flow to start
  5. Save and test by starting a new conversation with your page/bot

You’re done. New conversations on your Messenger page or Telegram bot can now automatically launch your onboarding flow.

⚠️
Warning: Group filters can block new users. If you include a group, brand-new contacts may not qualify unless they’re added to that group elsewhere.

5
Save and test with a new conversation

  1. Click New Trigger to save.
  2. Start a new conversation with your bot/page and confirm the flow starts.

Common Issues & Quick Fixes

Problem: I don’t see the “conversation started” trigger type.

Fix: Confirm your workspace has a Facebook Messenger or Telegram channel connected—this trigger type only appears for those channels.

Problem: New contacts don’t start the onboarding flow.

Fix: Review include/exclude group filters. If you included a group, ensure new contacts are added to that group elsewhere before the trigger is expected to apply.

Problem: The trigger doesn’t fire on the right page/bot.

Fix: Confirm the trigger is configured for the correct channel (the specific Messenger page or Telegram bot) and test by starting a brand-new conversation from that channel.
