Modifying Contact Membership (Manual Add/Remove)

You can manage group membership in two main ways: manually from an individual contact’s information page, or automatically in a flow using group actions. Both approaches help you keep segmentation accurate for broadcasts, campaigns, and operational tracking.

Quick setup checklist

Choose the method that fits your workflow: manual updates for individual contacts, or flows for automated segmentation.

  1. Open a contact and access the Edit dialog
  2. Add or remove groups and save changes
  3. Verify the updated groups on the contact page
  4. Use a flow split to segment contacts automatically
  5. Add or remove contacts using group actions in the flow
1
Open the contact’s information page

To update groups for a single contact, navigate to Contacts, then click the contact whose memberships you want to edit.

[CAPTURE: Show a contact’s information page with the contact details visible and the Edit option clearly displayed.]

2
Edit the contact’s group memberships

Click Edit on the contact’s information page. In the edit dialog:

  • Select the groups you want to add the contact to
  • Unselect any groups the contact should no longer belong to
  • Save your changes

[CAPTURE: Show the contact Edit pop-up with group selection options visible, and some groups selected and others unselected.]

Changes made here take effect immediately and apply only to this specific contact.

3
Review the updated groups

After saving, the contact’s updated group memberships appear on their information page.

4
Split contacts by a condition in a flow

For automated segmentation, use a flow. Navigate to Flows and open an existing flow or create a new one.

[CAPTURE: Show the Flow editor with a flow open and multiple nodes visible.]

Use a Split by Contact Field action to direct contacts based on their data (for example, splitting by a State field).

The has any of these words rule is useful when matching multiple possible values within a single contact field.

5
Add or remove contacts using group actions

Route matching contacts into an Add contact to a group action.
For example, contacts whose State field contains specific values can be added to a “Northern States” group.

[CAPTURE: Show the Flow editor with an Add contact to a group action configured for the Northern States group.]

As contacts pass through the flow, those matching the split condition are added to the group while other contacts follow alternative paths.

To remove contacts from a group, use the Remove contact from a group action.
This action can remove contacts from a specific group, or from all groups.

Use the “Remove from all groups” option carefully. Removing a contact from all groups may affect:

  • Campaign eligibility
  • Broadcast targeting
  • Program tracking

Contacts are only added or removed if they reach the corresponding group action node in the flow.

Common issues

The contact was not added or removed

Possible cause

The contact did not reach the group action in the flow.

Fix

Check your flow logic and confirm the correct path leads to the group action node.

Group membership changed unexpectedly

Possible cause

Multiple flows are managing the same group.

Fix

Review all flows that reference the group and standardize which flow is responsible for membership changes.

Manual changes were overwritten

Explanation

A flow may later update the contact’s group membership automatically.

Fix

Check active flows for group actions affecting the contact and adjust the flow logic if needed.
